Following the pro-democracy riots in Tonga in 2006, troops from New Zealand and Australia were sent to quell the rebellion and restore Monarchical order. This documentary was filmed in the week after the troops arrived detailing the riots, the pro-democracy movement, the abuse of people by Tongan forces and the operations of the New Zealand and Australian army. The movie stands very much at odds with the mainstream media account of the events.

Mate Ma’a Tonga beat USA Tomahawks

Mate Ma’a Tonga, Tonga’s National Rugby League team beat USA Tomahawks 28-20 in an inaugural Ohana Cup Test in Honolulu, on May 12.

Rugby League Planet reported, Mate Ma’a Tonga ranked 9th in the world proved too good for the 11th ranking USA Tomahawks in a physical game, at Kaiser Stadium.

Tonga scored five tries by Siafau Talanoa, James Tutuila, Petelo Tangilau, Sione Fakaosilea while Pitikeni Fungavaka and James Tutuila added the extras.

For the Tomahawks three tries were scored by forward Andrew Kniesly, fullback Kenny Britt and Vai Notoa, Matt Walsh added the rest by booting three conversions and a penalty goal.

It was the first ever test match played in Hawaii. The Ohana cup is a perpetual trophy and symbol to commemorate competition between the USA Tomahawks and rugby league in Pacific nations.

World Cup

The test match was a critical part for both team’s preparations for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.

Tonga is in Group C with Scotland and Italy, while USA is in Group D with Wales and Cook Islands.

The 2013 Rugby League World Cup will be hosted by England and Wales, but matches will also be held in Ireland and France.

Tonga PM leaves for NATO Summit in US

Tonga’s Prime Minister Lord Tu’ivakano will depart Tonga on May 16 to attend the 2012 NATO Summit hosted by US President Barack Obama, in Chicago.

The Acting Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet Alfred Soakai told Matangi Tonga this afternoon, the summit will discuss a way forward for Afghanistan during a two day meeting from May 20-21.

He said the high level summit will be attended by Heads of States and Heads of Governments of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization NATO.

Tonga is part of the International Security Assistance Force ISAF in which we currently have our fourth and last Tongan troops to be deployed to Afghanistan under the ISAF mission, he said.

Accompanying the PM are the Commander of the Tonga Defence Services, Brigadier General Tau’aika ‘Uta’atu, Lady Robyn Tu’ivakano and Alfred.

ISAF is a NATO led security mission in Afghanistan established by the United Nations Security Council, in December 2001.

Lord Tu’ivakano will depart the US for Okinawa, Japan to attend the PALM 6 Meeting on May 25-26.

He is expected to return to Tonga, on June 5.
